A 104-year-old woman from Greater Noida became the oldest person in the world to undergo a rare intricate and complicated partial hip replacement surgery at a private hospital in the city.
Mateshwari Devi suffered a fracture and traumatic arthritis of hip joints after a fall. “Due to the fall she had pain in her left thigh and was bed-ridden. After the diagnosis it was found that she had a fracture in her hip bone and the ball at the joint had dislocated,” said her 65-year-old son Narendra Singh.
She was admitted in the Jaypee hospital in the month of May where the doctors recommended hip replacement as the only cure. A team of three doctors performed the surgery in half an hour after the careful examination of the patient.
"It was challenging for us to take a decision for the surgery due to her age. Prior to surgery, we conducted whole body examination and it was reviewed by Cardiologist, Chest Physician and Nephrologists to ensure safety," said Dr Sanjay Gupta, Joint replacement surgeon at Jaypee hospital.

Anshumali Chaudhary, an anaesthetist at Jaypee hospital and member of the surgery team, said, “Administering anaesthesia to Mateshwari Devi also involved a lot of risk as she suffered from high level of thyroid hormones, kidney problems and shortening of the backbone. But these things were controlled somehow.”
Her son added by saying that it was also a difficult decision to convince himself and his family to go ahead with the surgery, "We are happy that we took a right decision," he added.
Devi was discharged in just five days after the surgery and is now doing her daily activities with the help of a walker.
